Cheryl Bedggood (WA)

The Nationals Working Party is pleased to announce Cheryl has accepted an appointment for our Nationals event next year.

As a child growing up in a large family, we always had dogs and taught them to do many things, but my lifelong love of dogs and dog sports was firmly cemented in Kalgoorlie over 40 years ago when I started instructing people to train their dogs; eventually becoming an Obedience Judge in 1980.

The first dog I trained and trialled was a beautiful Afghan Hound, who certainly challenged my abilities! She achieved her CD, winning trophies and awards for our performances, and she was also a member of the local Demonstration Team in Kalgoorlie, performing obedience, agility and retrieving tricks. After the Afghan, my German Shepherds were so easy! I spent many years travelling to Perth trialling my Shepherds, with numerous wins and successes along the way.

Holding the positions of Head Trainer and President of the Eastern Goldfields Kennel Club, and Senior Trainer and President of the Kalgoorlie & Districts German Shepherd Obedience Dog Club, enabled me to assist many people with their training. It was immensely rewarding to support and encourage them when they competed, and to relish their successes.

Tracking was another popular sport, and we would often go tracking after formal training, making a whole day of enjoying time with our dogs. We always found that this was a wonderful way for owners and dogs to relax.

Relocating to Perth in 1981 saw me purchase my first Rottweiler puppies to join my old German Shepherd crew. Again, I spent many years following my passion of instructing other Rottweiler owners on how to train their dogs, becoming Head Trainer and President of the West Coast Rottweiler Club for a number of years, and celebrating successes with members.

I have been an Agility, Games, Endurance and Dances with Dogs judge since the inception of these disciplines, and I am looking forward with excitement to judging Trick Dog Tests in 2020. I have enjoyed judging extensively throughout the state, including numerous Perth Royal Shows and State Obedience, Rally O and Agility Trials, and Dances with Dogs Competitions. I have also had the pleasure of judging National Agility and Obedience Trials. Additionally, I have judged at two Rottweiler National Obedience events held in Perth. Interstate appointments are similarly a highlight for me, and I have been lucky enough to have been involved in quite a few events in all disciplines over the years. Some of the more recent appointments completed have been for Obedience, Rally O, Agility, and Jumping at the Darwin Royal Show in 2018, and Rally O and Obedience at the German Shepherd National in Victoria in 2019. I have also judged Dances with Dogs in Victoria each year for the last five years. Likewise, judging Obedience, Rally O, Agility and Dances with Dogs in Kuala Lumpur and Singapore on quite a number of occasions have been wonderful experiences. The differences in the rules are always a challenge, which I embrace and enjoy the opportunities.

I love judging with a passion! There is something very special in being witness to great performances in any dog sport. Knowing how much hard work and training goes into a routine, a round, a run, or a test, it is immensely satisfying to see the rewards being reaped with well-deserved successes. Conversely, it is heartbreaking when it doesn’t go as planned! I am honoured and excited to be a part of the National Agility Trial in 2020. I look forward to the events and wish all competitors the best for a very successful National!
